The increase in income levels across Asia driven by strong GDP growth over the past 15 years has created a large number of wealthy individuals in China.  The main objective of these wealthy Chinese is to achieve stable, long-term capital appreciation. Wealthy Chinese tend to carry excess liquidity and have a very limited investment channel in mainland China due to strict regulations.  Also, high levels of volatility in the housing and property markets, as a result of speculation, has caused Chinese investors to look at global opportunities in which to invest at appropriate risk-return levels.
